LUIS CARLOS URREGO

Producer Profile

Finca La Ilusión is located in Urrao, Antioquia, Colombia, and managed by Luis Carlos Urrego, a 58-year-old, second-generation coffee grower. The farm consists of two hectares of land and sits at an elevation of 2,000 m.a.s.l, with around 3,500 coffee trees in production. Luis Carlos has been growing coffee all his life, learning the craft from his father. When he was young, he decided to move closer to town and ended up selling the coffee farm. However, he felt nostalgia for coffee growing, and seven years ago he bought a new piece of land in Urrao, and named it La Illusion. Ever since, he says, he feels like a missing piece of his life has been replenished.

Antioquia

Boasting altitudes of up to 2,200 masl, Antioquia is a region well suited to coffee growing, but has gone relatively unrecognised in the international specialty market. This has begun to change in recent years, with the growth in populartity of the Chiroso variety, which is grown almost exclusively in Antioquia.

Chiroso

Chiroso is a relatively "new" variety, having come to prominence after Carmen Montoya won the Cup of Excellence in 2014 with it. The variety has grown in popularity, and is grown primarily in Antioquia. Often referred to as Caturra Chiroso, it has actually been identified as an Ethiopian Landrace variety. Some of the best expressions of the variety show beautiful florality and crisp acidity.

Washed

Luis Carlos processes his coffee by harvesting the ripest cherries and de-pulping them the same day. Parchment is then submerged in tiled tanks and fermented for 4 days straight, before being washed. The coffee is then placed in raised beds to dry for around 8-12 days, depending on the weather.
