Story

Arbegona

Arbegona is the third coffee from Asefa Dukamo and Daye Bensa that we have roasted this season. Abergona is one of 30 districts in Sidama, with an average altitude of 2,200 masl, coffees from this region are some of the highest grown in the country. The area is blessed with a sunny climate and plenty of natural forest with indigenous trees that are estimated to be 200 years old. This coffee was collected from smallholders who grow local landrace varieties - predominantly 74158 - around Arbegona village and processed with Daye Bensa’s signature attention to detail.

Bensa, Sidama

Woreda Bensa is located in the famous Sidama Zone, and enjoys altitudes ranging from 1,800-2,200 masl. These elevations lead to slow cherry maturation, markedly high bean density, and as such, deeply complex flavour profiles.

Local Landraces

74158 is one six selections that were approved for release by in 1974 as part of a CBD-resistance (Coffee Berry Disease) selection program. During the 1970's, researchers from the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre searched the forests in the Illuababora zone for CBD-resistant mother trees. Today 74158 is heavily propagated in South Western Ethiopia, and is one of two dominant varieties in Bensa, along with 74112.

Picked at peak ripeness and delivered to Bona station where the coffee was fully washed and dried on raised beds.
