Rosendo Domingo is a second-generation coffee farmer who owns a few small parcels of land in Petatan, Huehuetenango. His family began producing coffee some 30 years ago, and Rosendo himself trained as an agronomist. This combination of agronomic training and a long background in coffee production allows him to effectively put into use best practices on his farms. Yulchen is one such farm, which takes its name from a Popti Mayan word meaning “place between rocks,” and refers to the rocky terrain of a nearby micro-region. At Yulchen, Rosendo grows Caturra, Catuai and Bourbon under the shade of Inga and Gravilea trees, and with the help of his sister, washes his coffee using natural spring water. In the near future, Yulchen plans on refining his washed process and looking into the possibility of natural and honey processing on his farm.
Huehuetenango is the highest growing region in Guatemala and is one of only three non-volcanic soil regions in the country. Its clay soils and heavy rainfall make it an ideal environment for high-quality coffee production.
