Producer Profile
This small, single variety Batian peaberry separation from Kiaria Washing Station, which is operated by the Kiaria Farmers Cooperative Society in Kiambu blew us away on the cupping table. It is the first single variety Batian we have worked with. Kiaria is located less than 50 km northwest of Nairobi. Sadly, coffee production in this area decreases every year as Nairobi grows outwards. At the same time, Kiaria FCS continues to attract new members. This is in large part due to their investments in community infrastructure, water, education, and electricity.
*Refer to our Grind & Brew Guide for recipes and grind setting ranges tailored to specific grinders and brewers.
For best results we recommend resting your filter coffee for two to three weeks post-roast before brewing.
Kiambu is part of the central coffee growing region of Kenya, alongside Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Muranga, and Thika. It sits not far from Nairobi and the foothill of Mt. Kenya. While production in Kiambu used to be very high, the growth of suburban Nairobi has continued to push deeper in Kiambu and resulted in conversion of more and more agricultural land into residential areas.
Batian is resistant to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease created at the Coffee Research Station (CRS; now the Coffee Research Institute, CRI) in Ruiru, Kenya. Batian was first released in Kenya in 2010. Batian is tall, and has potential for both high yields and high quality.
Cherries are hand-sorted upon delivery then floated through density channels, and pulped into dry fermentation tanks before soaking, rinsing and drying on raised beds.
