Maximiliano Garcia

Producer Profile

Maximiliano Garcia and his wife Esperanza, first-generation coffee producers from El Huabo, San Ignacio, purchased their own land after Maximiliano saved money working for a coffee cooperative. His experiences there shaped his farm management. The couple's attention to detail, passion, and dedication have earned them a strong reputation within their community. Their farm, Garmas, sits at 1,800 masl and is made up of several carefully managed plots, where Maximiliano and Esperanza grow a number of different varieties, from Caturra and Catuai to Parainema and Gesha. Like other farms in the area, Garmas uses traditional growing techniques, and has a focus on sustainable agricultural practices.

Cajamarca

San Ignacio sits at the north of Cajamarca on the border with Ecuador. The Eastern and Western Andes meet in the region, helping create distinct microclimates that are ideal for growing high-quality coffee.

Gesha

The famed and highly sought-after Gesha variety is originally from Ethiopia. It was transported to Latin America in the 1950s where it was noted for its tolerance to leaf rust. In 2005, the variety was "rediscovered" when it won that year's Best of Panama competition. Since then, it has gone on to break price records at auction year after year and has been planted by farmers across Latin America in hopes of securing high prices.

The variety itself is highly demanding, and it requires high elevations in order to really deliver the exceptional floral, jasmine and stone fruit cup characteristics it is so famous for. There are actually a number of genetically distinct varieties that carry the name Gesha, and most have been traced back to Landraces from the same geographic area in Ethiopia.

Washed

Fully washed with a 24-48 wet fermentation. The coffee was dried on raised beds for 15-30 days.
