Karamo Adara

Producer Profile

This is now our third year bringing in coffee from Karamo Adara station in Bensa, Sidama, and we finally had the pleasure of seeing the station itself in January. We continue to be amazed by the quality produced at these elevations which reach 2,300 masl. Approximately 1,500 producers contribute their coffee cherries to the station, primarily cultivating JARC 74158 alongside other indigenous varieties. The remarkable elevation results in exceptionaly dense beans with a high concentration of smaller screen sizes. The station's excellence is well-documented: Karamo Adara has earned Daye Bensa Cup of Excellence awards for three consecutive years (2020-2022).

Brewing Karamo Adara

Recommended Use: Espresso

Recipe:

Grind: Start at the coarser end of where you grind Subtext coffees for espresso.
Dose: 18g
Yield: 47g
Time: 32s

For best results we recommend resting your espresso for three weeks post-roast before brewing.

Sidama

Arbegona Woreda is part of the famous Sidama zone, where many of our favourite Ethiopian coffees are grown. Coffee is the main cash crop in Arbegona, where it benefits from very high altitudes and a favourable micro-climate.

74158

74158 is one of six selections that were approved for release in 1974 as part of a CBD-resistance (Coffee Berry Disease) selection program. During the 1970's, researchers from the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre searched the forests in the Illuababora zone for CBD-resistant mother trees. Today 74158 is heavily propagated in South Western Ethiopia, and is one of two dominant varieties in Bensa, along with 74112.

Washed

The Washed Karamo Adara is traditionally wet fermented for between 36 and 72 hours, and then dried on African beds for about 12 to 15 days, until the coffee reaches approximately 10% moisture. During peak sun, the beds are covered to prevent over drying
