Producer Profile
Pablo Guerrero first planted coffee on his family's farm in the year 2000. Hacienda El Obraje is located in Tangua, outside of Pasto, Nariño. Prior to then, nobody had really grown specialty coffee in Tangua, so Pablo was unsure about the viability of doing so. The risk paid off, as shown by this impeccable Gesha lot. El Obraje totals almost 100 hectares, 25 of which are planted with coffee and the rest kept as a natural forest reserve. The estate is equipped with fermentation tanks, depulpers, mechanical dryers, and raised beds. Pablo keeps a nursery for seedlings and uses a mix of both organic and chemical fertilizers. Additionally, El Obraje has a retention pond, which is used for irrigation.
*Refer to our Grind & Brew Guide for recipes and grind setting ranges tailored to specific grinders and brewers.
For best results we recommend resting your filter coffee for two to three weeks post-roast before brewing.
Nariño is characterized by steep slopes, and extremely high altitudes as well as a unique climate. Warm, humid air makes its way up from the valleys during the evening hours, allowing for coffee to be grown at higher altitudes than in the rest of Colombia, without risk of frost. Producers are small, biodiversity is traditional, soils are nutrient rich and well-drained.
Initially thought to be a natural hybrid of Red and Yellow Bourbon, this variety, famed for its characteristically pink ripened cherries and equally unique flavour characteristics, has become highly sought after. It has now been genetically confirmed that Pink Bourbon is in fact an Ethiopian Landrace variety. On our trips to Colombia, we've seen the variety proliferate across Colombia, particularly in Huila, where it has become extremely popular amongst specialty focused coffee producers.
Fermented for 36 hours in-cherry and then for a further 12 hours in sealed tanks. The coffee is thenwashed and sun dried for 2 days. Finally, the coffee undergoes 3 days of mechanical drying.
