Livio Reyes Jiménez manages Finca La Angelita in Espíndola, Loja Ecuador. Livio’s family has been producing coffee for 100 years, and while as a young man, he moved to the city in search of better opportunities, he returned to build a life around coffee. On La Angelita, Livio has planted Typica, Red Bourbon, and in 2022 he decided to focus on specialty coffee and planted Sidra trees. Up until then, he had been selling to local buyers at low prices. This Sidra lot really stood out to us on the cupping table with dense sweetness and bright, articulate fruit notes.

Loja province is located in the South of Ecuador and boasts high Andean altitudes of up to 2,250 masl. Situated between the Amazon basin and the Sechura desert, the province is blessed with many different microclimates including alpine tundras, cloud forest, and jungles. Loja accounts for about 20% of Ecuador's Arabica coffee production, with the region's mountainous geography and diverse microclimates, providing immense potential for high-quality coffee.
Sidra, or Bourbon Sidra as it is frequently called, was said to be created by cross-breeding bourbon and Typica. The result is a variety that has quickly gained prominence and spread across Ecuador due its potential for extremely high cup quality. Genetic testing done by World Coffee Research classifies Sidra as an Ethiopian Landrace Variety. There is some indication that there is more than one genetically distinct variety being called Sidra in Ecuador. Sidra is famed for its floral structure, deep sweetness and prominent acidity.
Livio harvests 100% ripe cherries, which are hand-sorted and depulped in the afternoon. The parchment is then fermented in tanks for 48 hours, washed, and laid to dry in marquesinas for 15 days, depending on the weather
