Producer Profile
Kivanga Estate is located in Embu County, Kenya, and managed by Morris Njagi. The estate spans 7.5 hectares at 1,750 mas| and operates its own factory (washing station). Kivanga is recognized in the region for producing high-quality SL28 and SL34 selections, which make up the entirety of this washed lot. With the proliferation of hybrids like Ruiru 11 and Batian in Kenya, it is not often that we see pure SL variety lots like this anymore.
*Refer to our Grind & Brew Guide for recipes and grind setting ranges tailored to specific grinders and brewers.
For best results we recommend resting your filter coffee for two to three weeks post-roast before brewing.
Embu lies on the Eastern side of Kenya's Central Highlands. The geography of the Eastern slopes of Mount Kenya provide a different growing evironment than the Western and Southern Nyeri and Kirinyaga. Facing Indian Ocean moisture systems more directly, Embu experiences higher annual rainfall.
SL28 is one of the best-known and highly sought-after varieties in Kenya. It was originally selected in the 1930s by Scott Laboratories. It is well regarded for its high-quality potential, its resistance to drought as well as its rusticity, meaning that it can survive on its own for years and later be brought back into production. Unfortunately, it is highly susceptible to coffee diseases. As such, we see less and less single variety SL from Kenya year after year as farmers naturally choose to rely more on disease-resistant hybrids. At the same time, SL28 it has made its way to Latin America, most notably Costa Rica.
The coffee is hand-picked at peak ripeness, then sorted and floated before pulping. The coffee is then fermented in open tanks, thoroughly washed to remove mucilage, and laid to dry on raised beds for 14 to 21 days, depending on weather conditions. During this time, the coffee is consistently rotated and hand-sorted to ensure top physical quality.
