Producer Profile
This is now the third season we’ve purchased coffee from Abel Salinas, and the first time we’ve bought from his smaller fly crop. Finca Arashi is located in Saraguro, Loja, Ecuador, and is managed by Abel Salinas, a 58-year-old, first-generation coffee grower and fifth out of twelve siblings. The farm sits at an elevation of 1,890 m.a.s.l. and consists of 7 hectares of land, and around 22,000 coffee trees in production and the majority of the production being the exotic Typica Mejorado. However, Abel also grows some Sidra and H1 Hybrid. Abel has only been producing coffee since 2016, but is now renowned in Loja, because, in 2021 he won Ecuador's Cup of Excellence Competition.

Loja province is located in the South of Ecuador and boasts high Andean altitudes of up to 2,250 masl. Situated between the Amazon basin and the Sechura desert, the province is blessed with many different microclimates including alpine tundras, cloud forest, and jungles. Loja accounts for about 20% of Ecuador's Arabica coffee production, with the region's mountainous geography and diverse microclimates, providing immense potential for high-quality coffee.
Often called Typica Mejorado, genetic testing done by World Coffee Research has shown that Mejorado is in fact a cross between Bourbon and an Ethiopian Landrace variety. The vast majority of Mejorado is farmed in Ecuador where it has exceptional quality potential, often showing aromatic florals and deep sweetness.
Abel starts his Mejorado Washed lot by de-pulping and then dry-fermenting the coffee for 24 hours. Upon washing the coffee, he then immediately places it to dry for 15 days in a greenhouse structure.
