Producer Profile
We're very excited to bring back coffee from Hamasho this season after missing it last year. This time, we selected this brilliant honey-processed lot. Hamasho Station is located in the Hamasho kebele (village), Bensa, Sidama. It is operated by Asefa Dukamo Korma, the owner of the famous Daye Bensa. The station sits at 1,920-2,200 masl and receives cherry deliveries from about 600 smallholders that live around Hamasho. Most of the cherry is of the Walega (74158) variety. The microclimate in Hamasho is perfect for coffee growing with warm days and cool nights and high elevations that allow for slow cherry maturation. This results in high concentrations of dense beans and smaller screen sizes.
*Refer to our Grind & Brew Guide for recipes and grind setting ranges tailored to specific grinders and brewers.
For best results we recommend resting your filter coffee for two to three weeks post-roast before brewing.
Arbegona Woreda is part of the famous Sidama zone, where many of our favourite Ethiopian coffees are grown. Coffee is the main cash crop in Arbegona, where it benefits from very high altitudes and a favourable micro-climate.
74158 is one of six selections that were approved for release in 1974 as part of a CBD-resistance (Coffee Berry Disease) selection program. During the 1970's, researchers from the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre searched the forests in the Illuababora zone for CBD-resistant mother trees. Today 74158 is heavily propagated in South Western Ethiopia, and is one of two dominant varieties in Bensa, along with 74112.
Hand-picked and then floated to remove defects. Coffee is dried on raised beds for 10-14 days depending on the weather.
